Making peace with your past and moving forward with your own life are just two of the many themes of The Windmill. Stephanie Gertler (Drifting, Jimmy's Girl), has a way of reaching into the hearts of her characters and readers. It is the story of a steady predictable couple, Olivia and Carl. They seemingly have life figured out and don't feel the need to burden one another with secrets of their past...a past filled with unresolved feelings, lost love, murder, and new identities. When Carl disappears one morning without a trace, it forces Olivia to revisit her own past. Olivia's life before Carl is beautifully told by Gertler and brought tears to my eyes and wondering feelings of what I would ever do if that happened to me. The best kinds of books are those that allow you to think, reflect, and to ignore everything else until its read! The Windmill had many parts like that and its definitely one I would recommend to a friend.
