Drifting by Stephanie Gertler has a little something for everyone. Meet Claire Cherney, wife to Eli, mother of two grown children, psychiatrist by day, and owner of the Dune Beach Inn in Drifting, Connecticut. Claire has just sent her youngest child off to college and is feeling very lonely and has begun to really reflect on how her own mother left her when she was two. A shifty man checks into the hotel with his blind daughter and. as secrets become known, Claire becomes very involved in a quest to save the girl. Ultimately their adventures lead Claire to her own mother. Adventure, romance, and mother’s love are just a few of the themes in this engaging novel.
This book will teach you lessons about life. Even as I have two young daughters and read about Claire and her reminiscing about her children growing up and feeling “The Empty Nest Syndrome” after they left, it reinforced my need to spend every moment I can with my daughters, as time will go so fast. Drifting also shows us that with the case of Claire’s mother, even though you want to forgive it is very hard to forget. Drifting is a very memorable read.
