Fuzzy's Flag
The week after the Colombia space shuttle tragedy, I wondered if I
should talk about it with my Kindergarten students. I decided to wait
and see if they even mentioned it at school. One morning before the bell
rang; a student came up and asked me why the flag was down. I took this
as my opening cue and sat down next to the child. I explained what had
happened to the space shuttle and how all of the astronauts were heroes
and so very brave. Tears welled in my eyes as I went on to explain that
they couldn't come home, but we would always remember them. After about
three minutes, I took paused and took a breath, and the boy said, "Mrs.
Weis, I mean the flag on Fuzzy Bear's mailbox, why is it down?"
